Video: The Lemons - 'Lemoncita'

We're taking a gamble that if we keep posting rad, summer-time tunes that winter will have to finally die. We brought you a review of Slushy's excellent Pastime Gardens and it scored us an amazing weekend. Now we're trying to keep it going with the help of The Lemons.
The Lemons have been brightening up the local scene for the last year with their brand ofjangly skippy bubblegum rock. January saw the release of Hello, We're The Lemons, a tape overflowing with playful, cavity-inducing, minute-long jams. They're following that up with a new split 7-inch (with Tokyo's Teen Runnings) on Gary Records. The single is called "Lemoncita," and the band has put together an amazingly kitschy and equally hilarious video for it; one that'll make your day if you like pizza, tacos, aliens, beer, dogs, cats and/or Duke Nukem. That should be pretty much everybody, right?

Video: Le Tour - 'Beat Up'

Local psych punks Le Tour have released a video for their oh-so-perfectly-titled track 'Beat Up.' The tune is, as the name suggests, a complete fucking bruiser- one that demands the volume on your speakers get cranked to the max. Your neighbors might not like it, but fuck them, a track this heavy deserves to be played loud.

After you've crumbled your building to its foundation, be sure to dig your calender out of the rubble and make note of Le Tour's two upcoming Chicago shows; May 5th at The Empty Bottle with Absolutely Not, MAMA and Flesh Panthers, and May 31st at Cole's with Flesh Panthers and Hollow Mountain. Those are two pretty solid bills, and both are FREE, so don't fuck up. In the meantime, check out that sweet Justin Reid Tvedt directed video below:

Video: Xoe Wise - 'Cigarette Break'

Cemeteries. Hamburgers. The Windy City Rollers. Motorcycles. People exploding into birds. A gun-toting angel.
These are just some of the visuals singer-songwriter Xoe Wise conjures up in the video for "Cigarette Break," a track from her excellent 2013 EP Breakfast. It's a totally ridiculous set of imagery- and it's totally fun.
Wise is currently in Las Vegas working on her new record, Racecar Orgasm. You can watch the video for "Cigarette Break" below, and then do yourself a solid and check out her cover of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You" here.

Video: The Orwells - 'The Righteous One'

Having a much buzzed about Letterman performance under their belt and a tour with the Arctic Monkeys underway, Chicago rockers The Orwells are keeping the flurry of activity going strong with the release of a new video for their track "The Righteous One."
The video was directed by Eddie O'Keefe (who was also behind their recent "Dirty Sheets" and "Who Needs You" videos) and offers another taste of what we can expect from their upcoming album to be released this summer.
Check it out below, and catch The Orwells live when they return home from the tour at their April 1st show at Lincoln Hall.

Video: Pink Frost - 'Ruins'

Chicago quartet Pink Frost have a new video out for their track "Ruins" from their latest album Sundowning. It's full of pretty colors and magic. Check out people multiplied, split in half, and generally having a grand old time while you're swept away by the soaring, intense guitar, drums and vocals of the tune.

Video: Twin Peaks - 'Fast Eddie'
Twin Peaks are releasing their debut album, Sunken, on July 9th. Wait, didn't WCR's own Gene Wagendorf III review that record back in August 2012? Yes, he did! It turns out the guys in TP are re-debuting their debut this month via Autumn Tone Records. And with it, they're bringing lots of other good stuff. Like a record release show at Schubas on July 24th, a set at Riot Fest in September, and a video for the track "Fast Eddie," which you can watch below.

Video: Archie Powell & the Exports make a B-horror flick

I was thoroughly entertained by last year's full-length release from Archie Powell & the Exports, Great Ideas in Action, and the guys continue to bring the goods. This time it's in the form of a video for "Only So Much You Can Do," the closing track on Great Ideas. Somehow the band got the idea to set the rollicking power pop tune to footage of themselves exploring creepy, evil-inhabited school grounds after dark, with plenty of B-horror-movie results. So random, and so fun. Check out the video below, and catch the band this Friday, June 7th, when they play Schubas with Quiet Company and The Kickback.

Watch JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound work 'No Diggity'

The A.V. Club's "Undercover" series--which finds bands coming into the A.V.'s office to cover a random song they choose from a list--produces performances that range from amazing to not so great to just plain odd. This week's installment, in which soulful Chicago favorites JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound take on Blackstreet's 1996 hit "No Diggity," is one to file in the amazing category. The band bring their typical energy and swagger to the song, revving up the tempo and taking it in a whole new direction that really works. See for yourself below, and catch JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound when they play Taste of Randolph street fest on Friday, June 14th.

If you've been gearing up for the sophomore full-length, Peach, from Chicago's own psychedelic haze-dwellers Secret Colours, here's one more thing to tide you over until the May 28th release of the record. The band has just gone live with a video for one of the new tracks, "Blackhole," and as you might expect it's got a sound you could fall into and get lost within. And the video--directed by Cory Solon and Katey Meyer and conceived by the band's Tommy Evans--features plenty of hallucinogenic treats to follow suit. Check it out below, and then show up to Secret Colours' next home city show on June 8th at the Empty Bottle. You can also listen to another new track, "Blackbird (Only One)," via the Soundcloud stream underneath the video.

Video: »radiant devices« - 'Much Less Desired'

The line between unsettling and alluring is often a fine one, and that's something Chicago's »radiant devices« seem to know well. With a poetic, daring sung/spoken vocal approach from frontwoman Mojdeh Stoakley over menacing, experimental post-punk instrumentation, it sounds off-kilter enough to make you a bit uneasy, while at the same time offering enough that pleases the senses to keep you wanting to hear more. To see what I mean, check out the band's latest video for their track "Much Less Desired," which manages to effectively transfer the biting feel of the track into visual form. And if you like what you hear, be sure to check out »radiant devices« live on Thursday, April 11th at Tonic Room or at Double Door on Thursday, April 25th. Also check out their single "Hell Hath No Fury" here and be on the lookout for a full length album in May.

Video: Oshwa - 'Old Man Skies'

In between making batches of flapjacks and chopping firewood, experimental pop quartet Oshwa found the time to record a music video for "Old Man Skies." The song is the first track released from the band's forthcoming Naked Ally Records release. Heavy on syncopated rippling and singer Alicia Walter's incandescent chirrup, the tune's almost overwhelming brightness is nicely tempered by deep bass grooves and some timely percussive fits. Smartly resisting the urge to craft an ultra-quirky video to match their distinctive sound, Oshwa let their music make the first impressions in this straight-forward performance video.
The group's new record is slated to drop this summer, but in the meantime you can acquainted with them via their 2012 EP transmissions from the midwest: a real-america tribute, and of course by checking out the video below.

Video: Maps & Atlases - 'Fever'

In the second music video from their 2012 album Beware & Be Grateful (the first was for the track "Remote & Dark Years"), Maps & Atlases pair their breezy, melody-driven song "Fever" with shots of a drifter-like character who starts out aimless and isolated but eventually seems to find a sense of purpose through small human interactions. According to guitarist Erin Elders in an npr.org article, the original concept involved "a roller-skating rink and a small army of extras," but budget and resource restrictions lead them to take a simpler approach to convey the message of the "importance of the human connections we make." Good work is hard to find. It seems Archie Powell & the Exports know this well, with their latest single "Job Fair" speaking for all who are unable to gain employment or who are trapped in a sucky, dead-end job. But in the video treatment of the track, the guys are able to entertain with their usual style of wackiness despite the song's theme of frustration. The clip includes farm animals, old-timey attire, clown makeup and lots of general tom-foolery to make for three minutes of good fun. Watch for yourself below.

The band have also released the track as a digital single along with a b-side called "Erik Elects to Veto," which you can get via Bandcamp. You can catch A&TE live next coming up November 21st at Metro with JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound (tickets and details here).

The guys in the Kickback have been acting up in class. As you can see in their latest video for their track "Little Teach," they've been forced to stay late and write lines on the chalkboard--specifically, lines reading "I don't care if this is Best New Music" (hey, detention is as good a time as any to make a little P4k jab). Aside from that, the live video--released with Love Drunk Studios and filmed in one take at DP Muller Photography in Omaha--features the band performing the song with their usual fieriness, which you'd be able to pick up on even with the sound off by looking at frontman Billy Yost's intense facial expressions (but it's probably better to listen with the sound, because the sound is good).

Video: Scott Lucas & the Married Men - 'There Ain't No Grave (Gonna Hold My Body Down)'

Fun fact: Prolific Chicago musician Scott Lucas is a connoisseur of old movies, including old horror films. At least that's what it says in the press release for the latest music video from Scott Lucas & the Married Men, which is composed of footage from the 1932 film "Vampyr." The Lucas-directed video--for the band's take on the traditional song "There Ain't No Grave (Gonna Hold My Body Down)"--very effectively uses the creepy black and white clips to match the eerie, old-timey Americana vibe of the song. Very appropriate for Halloween month. The video will be shown on the big screen at the Music Box Theater during the Music Box of Horrors film festival from October 13th-14h.
"Ain't No Grave" comes from the band's sophomore album Blood Half Moon. It has also been released as part of an iTunes bundle that includes the original eight-minute album track, the four-minute edit, a live version and the video.
Scott Lucas & the Married Men also have two home-city shows coming up next month: November 9th at Township and November 17th at Double Door (National Association for Down Syndrome benefit hosted by Art + Science).

The foursome formerly known as Apteka relabeled their psychedelic garage rock under the name Pink Frost this past summer, and now the freshly christened group have put out a new video for the diesel-fueled track "Where Days Go." Hard post-punk basslines rail against fiery space rock guitars on this heady, high-octane cut. Directed by Joe Carsello & Drew Reynolds, the accompanying clip is full of optical science in all colors as synesthetic swirls and graphs light up the band.

Chicago duo Wild Belle sign to Columbia, release new video

You might have heard bit about Chicago-based brother-sister duo Wild Belle over the past year. You'll probably be hearing a lot more about them in the coming months.
Natalie and Elliot Bergman--who together create a breezy sound described as having a "retro, psychedelic-pop feel with hints of jazz, reggae, and R&B"--have signed to Columbia Records, which will release their debut album Isles in early 2013.
According to a recent article by Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune, the duo, who grew up in Barrington, have been working together musically since Natalie was in her teens (she's 23 now; Elliot is 31), but have been focusing on writing and performing as Wild Belle only since last year. Previously, Elliot had toured with Afrojazz band NOMO.
Wild Belle attracted significant interest after releasing the reggae-infused track "Keep You" early in the year, and are now offering another taste of what's the come on the album with a video for a new track called "It's Too Late," which you can check out below.
In addition for preparing the album's release, the two are about to go on a tour which includes some dates with Tennis. Check out their site for details, and look for more information on the release of their debut soon.

Video: Geronimo! - 'Into the Sun'

It's been a couple months since Geronimo! last sandpapered our brainstems with their gritty, amped-up space rock. In this new video for the thunderous single "Into the Sun," the band enjoy a pretty sweet thrifting session in between Halloween-lit basement jams. The trio will be returning with their sophomore LP Exanimate on October 5th, the follow-up to their fantastic debut Fuzzy Dreams.
Keep an eye out for them in New York next month too, when they play the Exploding In Sound/GIMME TINNITUS CMJ Party at Paper Box in East Williamsburg on October 20th. Good things on the horizon all around for these loud locals.

When I wrote about Twin Peaks' recently released debut record, Sunken, I mentioned that the band conjured up feelings of summer skinny dipping and strolls along the lakefront. The group builds on that carefree, rabble-rousing ethos in their new video for "Stand in the Sand," in which we find these guys up to their usual hijinks: chilling by the beach, skateboarding, waving sparklers, smoking weed and trouncing around an abandoned industrial site.
The video, shot and cut by Ryan Ohm, is the perfect companion piece to the song's sweaty, make out swagger. That said, watching Twin Peaks gnosh on ketchup-slathered hot dogs is pretty fucking disturbing. Check it out below, at your own risk.

Video: California Wives - 'Purple'

Following this week's release of their debut album Art History, Chicago's own California Wives have put video to the audio of one of the LP's songs, "Purple." To go along with the track's colorful name, the video features artwork submitted by fans and other artists that was created with Sharpies (the band partnered with Sharpie to bring the video to life). It debuted during the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards.
See the video for yourself below, and as a bonus check out a stream of the track "Blood Red Youth." You can also check out California Wives live at Lincoln Hall on September 12th.
